INDIA: Taking stock of National Policy on Older Persons, 10 years after launch

. NEW DELHI, India / HelpAge India / October 1, 2009 It has been 10 years since the Government of India announced the National Policy on Older Persons in January 1999. On International Day of Older Persons HelpAge took stock of effectiveness of India's policy on aging. After an intergenerational walkathon was flagged off early in the morning at New Delhi's India Gate, chief guest Mr. Mukul Wasnik, Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment participated in the review. Ten years down the line implementation of the policy has been very poor, noted Mr. Mathew Cherian, Chief Executive, HelpAge India. Mr. Wasnik, head of the National Council for Older Persons, admitted that the task ahead is massive but a lot can be achieved with involvement of civil society. Reacting to the observation of Mr. M.M. Sabharwal, President Emeritus, HelpAge India that the budget for social schemes is not fully utilized, the Minister said a special committee will review the Policy. Legal provisions have been made in the Maintenance & Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens Act 2007.
