INDIA: 24-hour helpline for senior citizens goes live in Chandigarh

. CHANDIGARH, North India / The Times Of India / October 1, 2009 By Shimona Kanwar, Times News Network When not many reach out to trembling hands that look for help during the twilight years of life, there is now assistance just a call away. For the first time in the Tricity, an NGO, Dadadadi, has launched a 24-hour helpline to facilitate services for senior citizens. The service was launched on Wednesday, a day before the International Day for the Elderly. From information regarding availability of any specific medicines to providing a plumber, electrician or a technician, the helpline has all such arrangements for the seniors. “We have been inundated with calls since morning. While some wanted to know the availability of non-slippery tiles for the washroom in city stores, others rang up to just talk,” said Zoraver Singh, chairman of DadaDadi. As per official records, the Tricity has around 68,000 senior residents who will now be able to seek help at their doorstep. The NGO is also working on a tie-up with ambulance services to provide immediate assistance to the elderly, whenever needed. [rc] Copyright © 2009 Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd
