Local public agencies are making "cooling centers" available to those without air conditioning.
For the young, elderly or people with high blood pressure, local health authorities suggest it’s a good idea to take advantage of the offer. Emergency managers also suggested the mall, a movie or the library as other alternatives.
Stifling heat, with little overnight relief, is likely over the next few days with temperatures expected to crest triple digits. Forecasters with the National Weather Service indicated that temperatures should cool slightly by Thursday — but not by much.
"If 102 is your problem, 95 is not really your solution," weather service meteorologist Rodger Nelson said.
Clark County Fire District 6 is opening its air-conditioned station in Felida for anyone who needs it. Likewise, the city of Vancouver won’t charge admission for people simply looking to cool off in community centers at certain times of the day.
"The important thing is to stay hydrated," said Tami Kihs, emergency manager for the city of Vancouver. [rc]
