NEW ZEALAND: Legal, after 40 years

. WELLINGTON, New Zealand / The Dominion Post / Top Stories / July 27, 2009 By Kay Blundell, The Dominion Post THE PROPOSAL: The new Mr and Mrs Brown, Robyn and Dennis. "We were sitting having tea," she said, "and I just said, 'I am getting a bit sick of this, how about we get married next week?' He said, 'Are you free?''' Kent Blechynden/Dominion Post Enduring jibes about a shotgun wedding, Robyn and Dennis Brown have finally tied the knot after 40 years as a couple. Mr Brown has popped the question a couple of times during the four decades they have been living together, but finances did not seem to permit. The couple, both in their 60s, decided last week that the time had come. "We were sitting having tea and I just said, "I am getting a bit sick of this, how about we get married next week?"' Mrs Brown said yesterday. "He looked a bit strange at first, then said `Are you free?' I said, `Yes', and he said, `Okay, if you want to."' She said she was tired of having different names and time was marching on. "The years just go on and on and we just thought, `Blow it, we will do it."' Both have had big, nerve-racking weddings before, didn't want to go through that again, and decided to get married by a celebrant at the Jetty Licensed Cafe on Petone foreshore yesterday. Mr Brown forked out for a black outfit and a black-and-rust ensemble for his wife and, surrounded by nine family members and friends, she had a little weep. He got a bit tearful too. Only two of their eight children managed to make the ceremony but they are looking forward to a "big hooley" to celebrate their first anniversary and hope all the children will be able to attend. Mrs Brown thought getting married might inject a little romance, but said she had no complaints about her man. "He is one of those guys who will do anything for anyone. We've had our ups and downs, but got over those hurdles. At this age, it would just be nice to be one." Mr Brown described his new wife as someone there for everyone and "a really good mate".
