USA: "I am usurping Senior Citizens Day and calling it Amazing Elders Day"

TAOS, New Mexico, August 11, 2008: August 21 is Senior Citizens Day, so declared by the U.S. Government. If Ellen Wood, author and inspirational speaker, has her way it will be changed to Amazing Elders Day. Wood says this is the perfect day to re-think our concept of old age. Wood is on a mission to help transform America's elders into empowered, valued members of society. "I am usurping Senior Citizens Day and calling it Amazing Elders Day. What's a senior citizen anyway -- someone who's old enough to collect social security and get into the movies for half price? There are lots of those and it's like having a Whoever is Aged 30 to 50 Day," Wood says. Instead, Wood proposes celebrating Amazing Elders Day. "An elder is anyone who feels they've lived long enough to absorb wisdom from the people, situations and circumstances of their life. An Amazing Elder is someone ready to share their gifts of wisdom with anyone who asks," proclaims Wood. She suggests celebrating Amazing Elders Day by calling or visiting any elder who has influenced your life with their amazing wisdom -- and say thank you. At age 71, Ellen Wood is showing people how to grow younger and is living proof that it's possible. Having lost her mother to Alzheimer's, in 2004 Wood began a daily program of practices she created with the goal of growing younger, and it worked. She has a clearer, sharper mind and stronger body than before using the techniques and has regained the energy, stamina, flexibility and vitality she enjoyed 30 years ago. This success in reversing the accepted pattern of aging led Wood to share her techniques for growing younger. Wood and other pioneers, including scientists and physicians, are shaking the roots of the prevailing belief system and discussing instead, how we can grow younger as we age. According to Wood, "Society is handicapped by the prevalent ideas and beliefs about what aging looks and feels like, ideas inherited from generations past. We've been taught that growing old is grim, that it's natural to lose many of our aptitudes and abilities and sure isn't fun. Not so many decades ago, we were also taught that man couldn't fly." "Once we understand how much thoughts and beliefs determine what takes place in our bodies, we can begin to take control, change our thought patterns, replace limiting beliefs and create the joyful life we want," says Wood.
