IRAN: Acquatic Exercies Treat Fibromyalgia

TEHRAN, Iran (PRESSTV), February 23, 2008:

Aquatic therapy alleviates fibromyalgia, say scientists.

They suggest that regular aquatic exercise can prove effective in patients suffering from the painful condition of 'fibromyalgia'.

According to the study published in the journal Arthritis Research & Therapy, long-term exercise in a warm swimming pool helps reduce fibromyalgia symptoms and improves health-related quality of life.

Fibromyalgia is more frequently reported in females and symptoms include: chronic and severe muscular, neck and shoulder pain, sleep disorders, anxiety and depression

The disease has no known cause or cure and is treated with painkillers, exercise, relaxation therapy, and low-dose antidepressants, although none of these have proved to be effective.

A previous study in the same center had also reported that short-term exercise program helps ease symptoms. But scientists had claimed the pain returned when patients completed the exercise regimen.
