December 30, 2007:
Promoting an active lifestyle among the elderly was the core theme of the Sembawang Community Club Open House this morning. Working for a healthy body and mind, the elderly – with the oldest at 83 years old – were joined by the MP for that area, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan.
Ng Moi Song, chairman of the organising committee for the Open House, said: "First, they have a chance to gather together to know each other and from there, I think they will exercise more regularly and lead a healthy lifestyle."
To help the elderly achieve that, archery and pistol shooting are also being promoted as active sports. Besides indulging in physical exercises, there is also a flea market that offers a variety of items. The market is open every first Sunday of the month to help entrepreneurs and low-income families set up businesses with minimal costs.
At the community event on Sunday, more than 1,500 primary to junior college students received bursaries ranging from S$150 to S$300. They are among the top performers in their institutions.
