EUROPE: Mandatory Retirement Ages Are Permissible
LONDON (Ethical Corporation), December 17, 2007:
In a landmark discrimination law case, the European Court of Justice has ruled that mandatory retirement ages are permissible under EU law when they are designed to support a valid public goal such as cutting unemployment.
Groups opposing age discrimination had hoped that the Framework Equal Treatment Directive, passed in 2000, would give workers the right to stay in their jobs as long as they wished.
The ruling established a precedent, favouring employers over workers considering bringing law-suits on age discrimination grounds.
