Senior citizens in China's urban areas are living a better life compared with previous generations. This is according to a new report by the China National Committee on Ageing.
The report says more than 140 million Chinese people are over the age of 60 accounting for more than 10 percent of the country's total population.
The latest figures show that last year, 78 percent of the senior population in urban areas had a pension. This is an increase of nearly 10 percent from the year 2000. The income of these senior citizens jumped almost 62 percent. And more than 50 % say they are happy.
China is home to the world's largest population over the age of 60 with over one fifth of the world's senior citizens living in the country. China's population of senior citizens will reach 170 million by 2010. The number is expected to jump to 240 million by 2020.
