5 questions for Shirley MacLaine
By Deirdre Donahue, USA TODAY, November 7, 2007:
Shirley MacLaine offers her unique take on growing older in Sage-ing While Age-ing (Atria, $26). In her 11th book, the Oscar-winning actress and best-selling author, 73, addresses everything from Dennis Kucinich's close encounter with a UFO to the future of the planet. She spoke with USA TODAY.
1. What does "sage-ing while age-ing" mean to you?
With the state of the world being what it is, I would rather sage than rage. Saging connotes wisdom. I hope I'm getting wiser. To me, wisdom means an expanded sense of reality. There are a lot of things we can't see, but they are still real.

2. Why is Hollywood so cruel to older women, and why are you an exception?
Hollywood can be cruel to every age. I think Hollywood is now crueler to younger women because of the incessant invasion of privacy and the insistence on being thin.
3. Have you talked lately to Lindsay Lohan (who was to star in Poor Things with MacLaine)?
I haven't spoken to Lindsay since I visited her at Promises rehab. We're raising the money for the movie. It will be a different actress (who will star instead of Lohan).
4. You seem to go out on a limb in your books. Why?
Is spirituality out on a limb? Is consciousness out on a limb? Is the whole idea of looking within out on a limb? I don't think so.
5. What is the most important quality for people to embrace as they age?
Go for the inner peace. … Surrender to the serenity.

Sage-ing While Age-ing
By Shirley MacLaine
“I’ve been a questioner all my life . . . ”
So begins bestselling author and award-winning actress Shirley MacLaine, as she invites readers to join her on the most powerful, provocative journey of her life.
"Sage-ing While Age-ing" is slated for release on November 10.
Over the years, Shirley has firmly established herself as a fearless, iconoclastic thinker and seeker of truth. Now, as she confronts the realities and rewards of growing older, she reflects on the greater understanding of her own place in the universe that her experiences have brought to her.
Sparked by the experience of moving into a new house, she is inspired to look back across the remarkable professional and personal milestones she has experienced so far.
Surrounded by books, pictures, and the artifacts of a life well-lived, Shirley is able to recognize the profound power of synchronicity at work around her, discovering the invisible threads that stitch together the seemingly random events of her days, adding meaning even to the mundane.
Having grown older, she is increasingly concerned with the potential pitfalls of modern medicine. She shares personal insights into nutrition, homeopathy, and alternative medicine. Practical and bracing, here is advice for anyone looking to expand his or her understanding of health and well-being.
Moving beyond the physical, Shirley explores what has always interested her most—those things that are unseen. What is consciousness? What is the purpose of our lives? Are we alone in the universe? And perhaps the greatest mystery of all, what happens to us after death?
Filled with her trademark wit and candor, this is a fascinating, inspiring book that will delight and captivate Shirley’s fellow travelers everywhere.
