CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu (The Hindu), November 7, 2007:
‘Deepavali’ - also called Diwali - celebrations were organised at Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged on Tuesday, where half-a-dozen elders celebrated their birthday.
When cakes and samosas were distributed, some refused the cake. Some elders passed it on to the young people who had come to watch the celebrations. Some of the aged explained the reason — they were diabetic.
An elderly gentleman, who sat in the first row, refused samosas saying that he had no teeth. A volunteer of the Home, who was distributing the snacks, remarked with a gentle smile: “You have two front teeth.” Yet the gentleman passed it on to the person seated next to him.
The celebrations were launched by Member of Legislative Assembly and actor S.Ve. Shekher and his actor-son Ashwin.
“If I have come this far, it is because of my parents. I gave them respect and love thereby setting an example for my son,” Mr. Shekher said.
The programme was organised by BIG 92.7 FM radio, which plans to organise such celebrations at six old age homes in the city over the next few days. Radio jockeys from the channel performed for the senior citizens.
