JAPAN: Toto's Techno-Toilet Protects Elderly From Falls
TOKYO (Seniorscopie), July 11, 2006:
Toilets for the elderly are poised to undergo a revolution. Toto is bringing out a new ultra-responsive toilet with 27 sensors. Staff in nursing homes is therefore able to know whether the occupant has fallen or is in need of assistance. The system is far superior to video-surveillance because it does not infringe on the person's privacy.
Toto, the Japanese toilet specialist, is releasing a rather surprising new bathroom facility for the elderly. The Japanese company provides toilets which incorporate electronic, water-saving or grime resistant technologies. Knowledgeable of the senior market, Toto already sells elevated toilets for the elderly and heated seat toilet with warm water bidet functions. Yet Toto's new toilet is equipped with a monitoring system which detects whether the occupant has fallen or needs assistance.
Thanks to a set of 27 sensors attached to the walls and ceilings, nursing home staff may determine whether their patient needs help. A computer screen indicates the occupant's location so that staff can respond swiftly if there is an emergency.
The system is far superior to video-surveillance which infringes on a person's privacy. The sensors cost around 2,000 to 3,000 yen each and the total installation of the system coasts approx. 50,000 to 80,000 yen.
