A unique programme aimed at creating awareness among students and families about problems caused by ageing and faced by the elderly, their care by families has been launched by the Qatar Foundation for Elderly Persons and five girls' schools in the country. The programme also includes training and seminars aimed at educating the general public how to care for their ageing parents.
A group of students from each of the five selected schools will volunteer for the programme, to reach out to their counterparts in other institutions in the country and the general public, an SFEP source, disclosed.
Tara Al Issawi, an official at the education ministry and Dr Mahassan Akasha of the Qatar University, said, a major seminar was held in Doha recently as part of this project, which was attended by some 85 participants. Topics discussed at the seminar included the role of families in caring for the elderly, Islam's teachings in care of senior citizens, psychological needs of old people and other related issues.
Students from selected schools will visit aged people cared for at the Rumaillah Hospital in Doha. Seminars for students and parents, drawing and painting competitions on the theme of care for the elderly, essay and story contests, exhibitions on the theme of elderly care and public awareness drives, will be other features.
