INDIA: Delhi Police-HelpAge India Join Hands For Seniors' Sake
NEW DELHI (The Hindu), March 2, 2006:
`Oh God, why didn't you let me die young... ?'
These are the only words on the lips of the 68- year-old Arun Bakshi. He has two sons, but for name's sake. The elder one has settled abroad long back giving the hope of sending money every month, but it seems that he had forgotten his own address as soon as he stepped out! The younger one is with him but often forget to feed him properly.
Bakshi is but just another case of the growing insecurity among our senior citizens in cities as they grow old.
Keeping such people in mind, the Delhi Police's Senior Citizen Security Cell has recently joined hands with an eminent non government organisation, HelpAge India to generate awareness about the dilemma of our senior citizens. The initiative was backed up by the coffee chain, Café Coffee Day.
The volunteers of HelpAge India and Café Coffee Day set up helpdesks at various locations in the Capital to help the Delhi Police's registration drive under this joint venture.
"We have only 5000 people registered so far with the Senior Citizen Cell. We are committed to fighting any trouble caused to our respected citizens," said Muktesh Chander, ACP, Delhi police.
