MUMBAI (DNA Mumbai) January 14, 2006:
Seniors will jog into sunrise. On the lines of last year, this year’s Mumbai Marathon will have a separate run for senior citizens, said Tina Ambani, whose senior citizens’ magazine HARMONY is lending support for the run.
The seniors will delay their start a bit - their run begins 15 minutes after the regular marathon. Over 2,500 seniors had already registered, Ambani said. Last year, Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan took part at the seniors’ run.
This year’s celebrity participants include former Olympic sprinter Milkha Singh, Arjuna Award winner and former badminton player Prakash Padukone, and former hockey Olympians Merwyn Fernandes and M M Somaiya.
Actors Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji would flag off the run, besides participating, the organisers said. Actor Gulshan Grover has also confirmed participation.
The senior citizens’ run is for five km, and will follow a route different from that for the full marathon to avoid overcrowding of runners.
Ambani said the event was a way of re-integrating senior citizens, who felt left out of current trends, with the mainstream.
“When seniors participate, it is about being part of a mainstream event,” she said.
