INDIA: Don't Ignore Senior Citizens, Youth Advised

Pondicherry (Deepika/UNI), November 28, 2004: Pondicherry Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan today stressed the need for according proper care to senior citizens. Participating in the fifth annual day celebrations of the Pondicherry Senior Citizens' Welfare Association, Mr Lakshminarayanan said that old age homes in Indian society was not a good sign and against the values of the country. The youth, who are successful because of the hardwork and sacrifice of their elders, should not ignore them in their old age, he added. Love and affection from children would automatically give them strength, he said and added that the Pondicherry administration was prepared to extend assistance to senior citizens. In his message, Pondicherry Lt Governor M M Lakhera said the efficiency and experience of senior citizens would help in guiding the younger generation in the right path.
