INDIA: Senior Citizens To Fight Corruption

KOLKATA (The Statesman), February 12, 2004: A few senior citizens of Kolkata's Salt Lake have formed the Committee of Elders to fight against the widespread corruption in the country and the “moral degeneration that has set in some of the basic institutions of the state." The committee has 10 members, all of them retired and most of them are Central and state government officials. A committee member said: “Maladministration, corruption, economic offence and corrupt politicians often features in our discussions during the morning walk. Suddenly we felt the need to form a platform to raise our voice against the malfunctioning of the government." The forum steadily gained ground when retired persons from Salt Lake came forward to join the committee. “We do not want to restrict ourselves to Salt Lake, but want retired persons from other metro cities to join our forum."
