Lack of "joined-up" care services is letting older people down
The Health Select Committee today issued a report saying the quality of life and health of up to 800,000 elderly people is being 'diminished' by cuts to social care – with pensioners being "passed like parcels" between care agencies.
While recognising that there is a significant "resource pressure' on social services, Stephen Dorrell, Conservative chairman of the committee, said there was widespread failure to integrate health and social care.
"Elderly people [should be] treated as human beings rather than cases in different people's caseload," he said
The committee's report said that the Health and Social Care Bill, currently making its way through Parliament, was not designed to simplify this fragmented system of care services older people.
