Civil servants cover quarrel
The recently launched medical insurance cover for civilservants is bound to collapse, Union of Kenya Civil Servants has warned. Tom Odege, UKCS secretary general said though the concept was perfect on paper, it was proving impractical for their members to access medical care from hospitals under the cover.
He said the hospitalslisted by the cover administrator - National Hospital Insurance Fund – werestill levying charges on various cases like surgical, dental, and those seekingear, nose and throat treatment as well the cover was not explicit on howcancer cases should be handled. Odege said their members were spending a lot onpurchasing drugs which are always out of stock in government hospitals.
“NHIF over marketed clinics which are not available beyondNairobi, though they only exist on their papers that they have a countrywidecoverage, we have been in Kakamega Bungoma, Mumias, and Busia and those clinicsthey are talking about where our members can seek treatment have never beenheard,” Odege said.
He also faulted the administrator for having mixedinstructions to their staff in branches, “for instance when we meet at thenational office the language and common understanding is that the cover is a comprehensiveone, but when you get out the headquarters the terms and conditions changeswith exceptions on what is covered.”
