Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has announced a major welfare scheme of medical insurance for economically weaker Sikh families of Delhi.
Taking a tow from government initiatives of doling out sops just before elections, the Committee took the initiative of covering weaker section of the community from the funds of religious shrines.
"This is first time not only in the country but in the world that a religious shrine management body has started health insurance scheme for weaker section," said Paramjit Singh Sarna, president of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee.
Under the scheme Guru Harkirshan Health Insurance Scheme around 25,000 Delhi based families would be benefitted. Each of the family would be entitled treatment of around Rs 100,000. Sarna said around 150 hospitals of Delhi, including the top notch ones, would be enlisted in the scheme. He said that the Sikh families who would take this cover would remain firm on Sikh traditions and should have completely Sikh appearance.
