Among those present at the Biltmore Hotel this morning for the event was Governor General, Sir Colville Young and Minister of Human Development and Social Transformation Peter Eden Martinez.

A total of twenty nominees were cited for the Golden Age Heroes Awards this year. A presentation of the recipients was made by the person who nominated them and the awards were then presented by Minister Martinez. Although it was an event for Senior Citizens, you could see that most remained young at heart especially the Senior Steps Dance Group that delighted the crowd with their energetic dance.
“The Golden Heroes was started two years ago when we decided it was very important to acknowledge the contributions that older persons have made to society. So often they are forgotten, we don’t value them so much when they have gotten older so we felt that there so many older people around the country that are still volunteering in organizations, still contributing and we wanted to honor them so we started the process two years ago and this is the second one that we are holding today. We have people here that are in their 70s and 80s but you can see they have contributed to their communities for so many years.”

“This is a time where we recognize the efforts and the work that our senior citizens have been engaged in and of course several times the work they have contributed to the advancement and the development of this country go unhonored but this gives us a time in order for us in order for us to recognize their efforts and their work. I believe the timing; I think it was divine intervention because Christmas is a time when we recognize and we share and we bid each other good cheer so I believe the delay in fact has assisted us to do it at this time.”
