USA: An idea whose time has come - Seniors eager for fresh

CHARLESTON, West Virginia / Charleston Daily Mail / July 11, 2011

Senior citizens who meet income guidelines can receive $20 worth of coupons that can be used for fresh produce at local farmers' markets.

At the Capitol Market on Monday, AARP West Virginia was on hand to offer enrollment information about other benefits and promote the produce program, which is administered by the state Department of Agriculture.

Social workers from Kanawha Valley Senior Services took applications for people interested in the Veggie Vouchers.

Participants must be at least 60 years old. Proxies who sign up for participants must have signed statements from the participant giving them authorization to do so. Proxy forms are available at local senior centers.

The vouchers are made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is providing about $520,000 for the program this year.
