MALAYSIA: RM422.5mil in aid given to more than 120,000 senior citizens in 2010

KUALA LUMPUR / The Star / Nation / News / July 7, 2011

A total of RM422.5mil was given to 120,496 people aged 60 years and above as assistance for the elderly, under the National Policy and Action Plan for Senior Citizens last year.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie said Wednesday that the recipients accounted for 30% of the 424,526 people given aid by the Social Welfare Department under various schemes.

The amount given to the elderly was 35% of the RM1.2bil total that the department distributed in aid, she said in reply to a question from Senator Datuk Zaitun Mat in the Dewan Negara here.

With the assistance, the senior citizens were able to meet basic needs and did not have to stay in welfare institutions, Heng said.
