SPAIN: Spanish writer Jorge Semprun has died aged 87

Jorge Semprun, author of "The Writing or the Life" has passed away "very peacefully" at the age of 87 in his Parisian residence.

Jorge Semprun, the writer and the former Spanish Minister of Culture, died on Tuesday evening, June 7 in Paris, it is learnt from his grandson Thomas Landman.

Jorge Semprun, who exiled himself in France with his family after the Spanish civil war (1936-39 ), died "very peacefully" at the age of 87 in his Parisian place of residence, announced Thomas Landman.

Resistance fighter and deported convict:  Jorge Semprun was a Resistance fighter of Nazism, and was deported to the camp at Buchenwald. He was an anti-Franco communist activist.

He dedicated himself to writing, in French and in Spanish. He wrote about his deportation in "The Writing or the life". In 1969, his novel "The second death of Ramon Mercader" won the Femina prize.

Screen play and dialogue writer of films "Z" (1969) and "The Confession" (1970 ), Jorge Semprun also collaborated in the cinema of Yves Montand and the director Costa Gavras.

He was also Minister of Culture from 1988 till 1991 in the government of the socialist Felipe Gonzalez.
