SPAIN: Catalan linguist Miquel Siguan, 92, has died

In 1988 the Government awarded him the Creu de Sant Jordi.
Miquel Siguan a key scientific figure in the early years of the Transition, brought the Quebec language immersion model that would end the school system implemented for Catalan.

He was the creator of the School of Psychology at the University of Barcelona (UB), doctor honoris causa by the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and Geneva universities, Basque Country and Seville, and author of some thirty works, many of them translated into various languages.

His ability led him to a scientific career that would lead him to clinical psychology industrial psychology, social, developmental and finally, in the 70s, in the field of psycholinguistics, and the study of the Catalan language.

In the 80’s and 90’s he became an adviser to Unesco and the European Commission. [rc]
