INDIA: Haryana state government to establish senior citizens' clubs

. CHANDIGARH / Press Trust of India / December 2, 2009 Haryana government will set up 1000 clubs for senior citizens for which Rs 160 million have been sanctioned. "The state government has framed a policy to set up 'Varishtha Nagrik Samman Clubs' in the rural areas and during the current financial year as many as 1000 clubs would be set up in all the districts for which Rs 1.60 crore had been sanctioned," Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said here today. Scene from a village in Haryana The policy aims at promoting the concept of productive and healthy ageing and to facilitate social interaction and socio-psychological support to elders, he said. Giving details of the scheme, Yadav said that Rs 15,000 would be given to each club for purchase of furniture, besides a sum of Rs 50,000 would be given to each district for publicity of the scheme.
