INDIA: Maintence of Parents and Seniors Citizens is now law in most states

Mr. D. Napoleon, India's Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today confirmed that the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 has been brought into force in almost federal states and Union Territories.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur and Sikkim are the only states that have yet to bring the law into force. These States are being persuaded to immediately notify and implement the Act, the Minister said.
The Scheme for Integrated Programme for Older Persons was revised from April 1, 2008. Under the revised scheme sensitizing programmes for children in schools and colleges is one of the projects admissible for financial assistance.
The Government has already provided financial assistance to NGOs for construction of old age homes. At present, financial assistance is provided to NGOs for running and maintenance of Old Age Homes. [rc]
