BEIJING, China / People's Daily / Society / November 7, 2009
According to a recent conference on China's aging population, elderly over 60 years old already number almost 160 million, making up 12% of China's total population. China is rapidly becoming an aging society.
It is estimated that by the year 2014, the elderly population will reach 200 million. To compensate for a lack of efficient social care programs, China should fully develop the heath care system and be prepared for an upcoming peak in elderly requiring treatment.
In the past ten years, the Chinese government has given much attention to facilities and services that provide for an aging population. At present, the number of Elderly Care Centers is over 40 thousand, holding more than two million senior citizens. In the next five years, China plans to establish roughly 200,000 elderly activity and service centers in one third of towns nationwide. Meanwhile, it will keep an eye on the aging problem in the countryside and completion of new healthcare system in the rural areas. [rc]
