Shanghai's ancient treasures said living to over 100 years needs not only good living habits, but also a warm family.
The city today announced 10 "longevity stars" to mark the coming Chongyang Festival. The eldest was 110-year-old Li Suqing while the youngest were three 104-year-old men.
This was the second time the city has selected "longevity stars." Two of the 10 announced last September passed away during the past year, so two new stars, both from Hongkou District, were revealed today, said the Gerontological Society of Shanghai.
Li is cared for by her daughter Tian Yulan in Pudong New Area. The 69-year-old bathes her mother every morning, and has been studying recipes for her for several decades.
Every winter, Tian prepares tonic for Li to keep her healthy. "Although we are not rich, we'll never save money from my mother's mouth," Tian said.
Hongkou District had three longevity stars this year - the most in the city. Jing'an District, however, had the most seniors over 100 years old, said the society.
Up to the end of last year, the city had 836 seniors over 100 years old, among which 661 were female and 175 were male. In Jing'an District, about 16 people among 100,000 lived over 100 years, officials said. [rc]
