SHANGHAI city's first center specially for elderly people suffering from Alzheimer's disease will open on Sunday in Baoshan District.
The center will be able to hold 250 seniors and up to yesterday about 50 have registered to stay there.
Based on designs of rest homes in Europe, the center will ensure seniors' safety while allowing more freedom, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
"Before, rest homes kept seniors suffering from Alzheimer's disease indoors like schizophrenia patients," said Gao Julan, deputy director of the bureau.
The center will have a cloister walkway in a design "more human-oriented," she said.
To prevent seniors straying from the center, doors will have infrared facilities, according to officials.
The center's main building will have five floors, with the first level including three apartments where seniors can mingle.
Some nurses for the center had received training in the Netherlands, officials said.
Ding Li, a center official, said caring for Alzheimer's patients is much more difficult than for regular seniors because of incontinence and memory loss.
The predecessor of the center was the Shanghai No. 3 Social Rest Home, which had experience with Alzheimer's patients.
The monthly fee for the new center, excluding food, will be 2,000 yuan (US$293). [rc]
