AUSTRALIA: Sample a Greek treat for charity

. BRISBANE, Queensland / South-East Advertiser September 10, 2009 By Julian Kennedy COORPAROO Discount Pharmacy is holding Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to raise money for the Cancer Council. Owner Sophie Koutsoukos said the fundraiser was usually held in May but renovations to her pharmacy delayed the annual event. This year’s morning tea on September 17 will include a Greek theme in keeping with Ms Koutsoukos’ family heritage. Ms Koutsoukos expects more than 100 people to attend the event, which has been popular with her customers each year. “It is a fun event because I’m Greek and some of my employees are Greek, so the mamas make all the Greek sweets,” she said. “It’s also a really nice day for the elderly people to get out. Last year we sold $1600 in sweets and it was a really big day.” Although the morning tea starts at 9.30am, the pharmacy will sell sweets and drinks throughout the day and has takeaway options for people in a rush. Ms Koutsoukos has had a long involvement with fundraising for cancer research. In 2004 she walked a 60km stretch of the Great Wall of China to raise money for the Cancer Council of Victoria. Customers of the pharmacy also have access to a wider range of products and services thanks to the renovations. “It’s pretty new and exciting. We’ve taken over another store next door and the pharmacy now includes a sleep clinic,” she said. [rc] © 2009 News Community Media
