Smedes visited Lime Creek Nature Center yesterday (last Wednesday) as part of the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board's "For Seniors Only" program series. Tim Ackarman/ For The Globe Gazette MASON CITY — Iowa photographer and author Ty Smedes spoke to a group of about 40 North Iowans this week at Lime Creek Nature Center. His visit was one of the quarterly “For Seniors Only” programs hosted by the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board (CGCCB), and Smedes was curious as to whether he fit the bill. The consensus was that Smedes, age 62, made the cut. “You’ve got a senior giving your senior presentation,” he said. CGCCB has hosted events geared toward seniors for about the past nine years. “We’re always trying to reach out to different groups,” said County Naturalist Todd VonEhwegen. Smedes specializes in nature photography. He gave a presentation featuring photos from his new book “Capturing Iowa’s Seasons,” followed by a slide show set to music entitled “Things Worth Saving.” Past events have featured presentations on geode cracking, cemeteries, archeology and bird watching, among many others. For Seniors Only events are usually held on weekday mornings and followed by lunch. “Many seniors are retired,” VonEhwegen says. “They enjoy the social aspect of the programs as well.” Don and Marcy Gebel of Mason City have been members at Lime Creek for more than 20 years. They appreciate the For Seniors Only programs and other recreational opportunities at the nature center. “Todd always puts on some interesting speakers,” Marcy said. “We’re lucky to have this nice place.” So how old do you have to be to qualify as a senior? Actually, the restrictions are pretty lax. “You can come whatever age you are,” said VonEhwegen. “We’d love to have more people come out.” [rc] For more information, go to www.co.cerro-gordo.ia.us, then click on the “outdoors” link.
