Some know her as Chicken Lady while others know her as Honey Lady. Either way, people who know Joy are all inspired by her energy, spirit and joyfulness. At the age of 74, Joy is constantly working and never stops.
Joy and her husband live in Clayton, St. Louis which is like the uptown for the Metropolitan St. Louis area. There are trendy condos, lovely town homes, and beautiful single family houses shaded by large trees with pristine yards. But Joy is a pioneer who started to raise chickens more than 20 years ago in her backyard.
Joy practices Taichi
Surprisingly, you could not smell anything when standing in her backyard by the lily pond. She loves her chickens and sees them as her own family, and she sells the eggs from her free-range chickens. Her eyes lit up when she announced that she was getting a mommy chicken and 10 babies the other day.
In recent years, people talking about being green and organic. To Joy, they are just part of her life style and she is nonchalant about it. She totes a Basmati rice bag around town wearing a pair of Birkenstock. She also owns 6 bee hives which might have half a million bees in them. She makes honey, wax candles, royal jelly, and bee pollen. She sells them at the farmer’s market. She turned an upstairs patio into a green house and has many exotic plants and herbs. If she is not busy with chickens, bees, plants and two dogs, she will create exquisite quilts or gorgeous decoration pieces for family and friends.
Joy wears a marvelous smile and her facial skin is beautiful with a baby peach hue. People might assume that her life is always smooth. But the truth is that she got lymphoma cancer 11 years ago. She went through various treatments. Coincidentally, she also learned about Taichi that time. Being an early adopter of many new things, she started to take Taichi lessons.
First she learned the Yang Style. Then, she studied Wu Style before her instructor moved to the West Coast. She has been learning modified Chen Style Old Frame Routine One from Shifu Ming Busalaki at Center of Clayton for 4 years. It is a challenge to learn all 48 movements; some students after a few years still have a hard time doing the form by themselves without following a lead.
Amazingly, Joy can do it all by herself. What’s more, she can even practice Taichi wearing a long skirt. She has also learned another Chen Style Form from Mr. Michael Shoemaker. She practices Taichi three times a week as well does some floor stretches. She thinks Taichi is really helping her with balance, lowering her blood pressure and keeping her healthy. She recommends heartily to anyone with high blood pressure.
Joy has been cancer free for 11 years.[rc]
