USA: Harrison Ford is 67, and enjoying Senior Citizens Day today

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida / Palm Beach Post.com / Living / August 21, 2009 By Sonja Isger, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Mark your calendar, it's National Senior Citizens Day - a day delivered to us by none other than the then 73-year-old president who announced he would not exploit his opponent's "youth and inexperience" in his second run to become the nation's chief: Ronald Reagan. (That youngster was, of course, Walter Mondale, age 56.) Reagan was 77 when he signed the proclamation for National Senior Citizens Day in 1988. But who is a senior citizen these days? Certainly, Reagan, at 77 qualified. In the U.S. you can join AARP at the relatively young age of 50. You qualify for some government benefits at 62 - but if you were born after 1959, you won't be officially in retirement age until you're 67. Han Solo - played by Harrison Ford - qualifies now. Also 63: Diane Keaton, Diane Sawyer, Helen Mirren, Debbie Harry and Goldie Hawn. Barack Obama, by the way, just turned 48 in August. So no taking part in this day for him. But Vice President Joe Biden will be 67 years old in November. "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute," the proclamation reads.
