USA: Retirement Not An Option For Many Boomers

. ORLANDO, Florida / Central Florida News / July 20, 2009 By Allison Walker The jobless rate for people over 55 is at a record level - about 7%. Some boomers are doing everything they can to hang onto their job as long as possible. Jan Carder is on her 38th year of serving eggs and sweet buns at a downtown Orlando restaurant. The unemployment rate of people 55 and up is more than double what it was this time last year. "I just have a good relationship with the owners. Always have. They're like family. And I wouldn't think to go anywhere else," said 63-year-old Carder. But Brian's Restaurant is no different from the rest of the country. Economic fears are up. AARP said many people who once expected to retire at 62 now expect to work until at least 65. The Labor Dept. found that on average, it takes someone who's over 55 about 7.5 months to get a new job. That's why the owners at Brian's Restaurant are making tweaks so they can keep these long-time employees on board. The owner said she's still able to employ Carder and the other waitresses by now having them work one fewer day, but with more tables. "So it made up for the money say they lost on the other day, so it works out better. And it doesn't cost them gas to come in," said Sydele Homel, the owner of Brian's Restaurant. Carder's boss is 76 years old. The two seniors also fear retirement for a reason other than financial security - boredom. "It's good for your mind to keep yourself busy. And they can't get a bookkeeper that's cheaper than me," said Carder. [rc] Source: cfnews13.com
