USA: Giant cake and flowers for Pat Thomas on her 114th birthday

. BUFFALO, New York / wgrz.com / July 1, 2009 By Erika Brason Pat Thomas is celebrating yet another triple-digit birthday! She was joined by the residents of St. Francis of Williamsville for her 114th birthday party Monday. Thomas was presented a giant cake and flowers while sitting at the front of the community room at her nursing home. The secret to her longevity seems to be simple, according to those who've known her for years. Frank Kelly took care of Pat for 50 years while living next door to her in Snyder. "She was always busy and loved to spend days in the garden," says Kelly. Pat was an avid gardener during her younger years and was involved in many garden clubs. She also volunteered for Veteran's Hospital. As the 4th oldest person in the world, Pat is only younger than a 115 year old woman in California and two other people who turned 114 in May of this year. Pat is still very much a character and lived on her own until five years ago. She was born in Iowa in 1895 but moved to Buffalo in 1946 when her husband began teaching at U-B. After the birthday party, people didn't say good bye, they said, "See ya next year!" [rc] Copyright ©2009 wgrz.com
