ISRAEL: Maccabiah to Promote Sports among Seniors

. JERUSALEM, ISrael / Israel National News / July 12, 2009 The 18th Maccabiah international Jewish sport event, which opens Monday, will emphasize for the first time sport competition among senior citizens. The emphasis on elderly athletes is due to joint cooperation between the Maccabiah with the Ministry of Pensioner Affairs. Senior citizens will take part in the opening ceremony and competitions as part of advancing awareness to the sector’s participation in leisure time activities and physical fitness. At the opening ceremonies, nine young Israelis will march together with nine famous senior citizen athletes waving an Israeli flag. Deputy Pensioner Affairs Minister, Dr. Leah Ness stated that she hopes that the participation of the senior citizens will bring “awareness to sport activities within the third age, which greatly helps slow down the natural aging process.” [rc] Leah Ness. 2007 Photo © David Rabkin News Source: Arutz Sheva
