INDIA: Car stickers will be special privilege for Chandigarh's elderly

. CHANDIGARH, The Indian Express / July 20, 2009 In a bid to make life ‘hassle free’ for senior citizens, the Chandigarh Traffic Police has come up with a unique initiative. Under a special scheme, to be launched by the end of this month, the elderly will be given special car stickers. The step is being taken to give special privilege to senior citizens when they keep their cars in crowded parking lots. The traffic police has written to the Municipal Corporation to issue instructions to parking contractors to treat the senior citizens with respect and show them the way in busy parking lots. The step is part of the traffic police’s community policing initiative. The stickers will be issued to only those senior citizens, who have an identity card of the Social Welfare Department, certifying them as Chandigarh residents. The stickers are meant to provide due respect to elders when they drive and park their vehicles. “They should get the respect they deserve. It was being witnessed that they faced hassles while parking their cars. For example, they had to wait in queues for long durations. With the stickers on their vehicles, others around them will treat them better,” SP (Traffic) H.S. Doon said. [rc] © 2009 The Indian Express Limited.
