DENMARK: Aged demand more fun and food

. COPENHAGEN, Denmark / Politiken.dk / July 13, 2009 An increasing number of older people in homes make out their wills in favour of parties and good food for surviving home occupants. Retired people in old people’s homes and centres are increasingly making out their wills in favour of other occupants at the homes – but on the condition that the funds are used on parties, good food and other extra benefits. Foto: Jonas Pryner Andersen The Spurvegården Home in the Copenhagen suburb of Hvidovre, for example, received DKK 740,000 last year from one of its older occupants – but on the condition that the money should be used on banquets for the elderly at the home. Another home received DKK 100,000 in a will but on the condition that it was used on extra parties and entertainment. Generosity: The Danish Tax Authority says that there has been an increase in the number of cases in which Danes make out their wills in favour of institutions such as old people’s homes, centres for senior citizens and museums – none of whom enjoy tax-free status. From 2007 to 2008, the number of such cases rose some 28 percent to 240 and in the first quarter of 2009 the Authority has already handled some 128 cases in which institutions have sought inheritance tax exemption. Organisation: The Danish organisation for older people Ældre Sagen says the new trend requires new rules. “It is something of a breakthrough that council institutions receive inheritances, and the trend needs new rules to make sure that inheritances go to users and are not used for operational expenses. One solution could be that a home Board or User Council should administer how the funds are used,” Ældre Sagen Director Bjarne Hastrup tells Ekstra Bladet.
