CZECH REPUBLIC: Mere 17 percent of Czechs expect decent old age life, poll finds

. PRAGUE, Czech Republic / Czech Happenings / ceskenovini.cz / July 25, 2009 A mere 17 percent of Czechs believe that life in retirement can be decent and of a good quality and almost half of people think this is not possible, according to the continuous results of polls Petr Sak, from the Agency of Sociological Surveys, presented to journalists this week. More than 1000 people over 15 were included in the survey. A half of them said they think the Czech Republic is not prepared for population ageing. Twelve percent of Czechs see old age as a threat or a risk, 45 percent say it is part of life. They are neither afraid of it nor are they looking for it, Sak said. Czechs are afraid the most of falling ill, of financial deprivation and of being alone. "The Czechs are more afraid of loneliness than of death," Sak said. He added that men are more afraid of sex decline. Sak said university-educated people are markedly less afraid of old age and they more look forward to it. "Dependence on education is relatively strong," Sak said. Present-day seniors are more active, more educated and more communicative and they travel more than old-age people did in the past, Sak said. Senior-focused surveys are funded by an Education Ministry grant. [rc] Author: ČTK www.ctk.cz © Copyright 2009 Neris, s.r.o.
