JAPAN: Koki Chikatsuji, first director of ibis conservation center, dies aged 66

. OSAKA, Japan / The Mainichi Daily News / May 6, 2009 Koki Chikatsuji (Mainichi) Koki Chikatsuji, the first director of the Sado Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center, passed away Tuesday. He was 66. Chikatsuji had served at the center in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, from its establishment in 1967 until his retirement in March 2003. He was involved in many important projects, such as the capture of all five ibises left in Japan on Sado Island in 1981 and the first successful artificial breeding of ibises from China in 1999. After his retirement from the center, he was engaged in the activities of the Japanese Society for Preservation of Birds and also participated in preparations for the test release of ibises into the wild in September last year. His funeral will be held Friday by his wife Michiko at JA Rainbow Hall in the Niiboono district of Sado.
