It’s rare to see a mother-daughter relationship as candid as the one the two Chopra women share. “My mother is the reason I’m here. I’m not being clichéd, but my mum was the one who sent in my entry for the Miss India pageant. I didn’t even know she was doing it,” says Priyanka, who went on to not only win a Miss India title, she subsequently bagged the Miss World crown.
Instead of simply resting on her laurels, or in this case, the tiara, a young Priyanka entered the big bad world of Bollywood, delivering a punchy performance in all her films. “A lot of credit really goes to my mother,” says Chopra, admitting that she never gets the chance to miss being pampered by her mum. “And that’s because I found an easy solution to that problem... I take her with me wherever I go. That way, I don’t miss a single moment,” she says.
Remembering the pre-Miss India days, her mother adds: “You know, initially, there was a lot of opposition from her father. But she is a girl with a lot of determination and perseverance.”
But close as they are, Madhu admits that at times she can’t help but feel jealous of the bond Priyanka shares with her father. “Ours is more of a mother-daughter relationship, but Priyanka and her father are more like friends. She can tell him anything under the sun, and yes, that makes me a little envious. Though, it is good to see such a healthy relationship between the two of them.”
A family holiday is on the cards, and her mum is waiting for the 26-year-old actor’s schedule to ease a bit. “She’d like it if we went on a holiday, and she’s been wanting to do so for a long time now, but I’ve been tied up with work,” says Priyanka, ruefully.
Madhu can’t stop raving about Priyanka’s attention to detail and her need for perfection. “Just recently Gerard Butler [there have been spicy rumours of the Hollywood actor’s interest in Priyanka] was invited for dinner to our home. Priyanka personally made all the arrangements including sprucing up the house. She made sure that every corner was cleaned. You know, she is a very homely girl,” says the doting mother.
Madhu then moves on to expound on Priyanka’s cooking (not dancing) skills. “She knows basic cooking, but does not like entering the kitchen. She cooks for survival. She can make parathas and burjis.” It’s difficult to conjure up images of the sexy Chopra kneading dough and making parathas on a hot tava.
Food, however, does seem to hit a nerve with the actor. “My mother constantly wants to feed me,” says Priyanka. That “sensible” trait quickly kicks in and she says, “But that’s because I usually have an action-packed day, and more often than not, I forget to eat. But at the end of the day she is my mum and I love her just the way she is.”
Her mother retorts: “The only problem with her is that she neglects her health. I’d put it down to the fact that there are two doctors in the house and she knows if she falls ill they are there to take care of her.”
According to Priyanka, her mum takes the regular link-ups and boyfriends with that veritable pinch of salt.

“She ignores them. By now, she knows that they are a part and parcel of the profession,” says the actor.
But if mum has her way, marriage may be on the cards. Madhu admits that she had started thinking of her daughter’s marriage when Priyanka was 21. “But I got married at the age of 28. So, in retrospect, I want her to settle down by 30. Till then, I want her to enjoy life. There are a number of hobbies she would like to pursue such as bungee jumping, para-gliding and deep sea diving. I want her enjoy life before responsibilities set in.”
Priyanka signs off with an almost Hallmark-ish tribute to her mother: “There are so many other qualities about her that I would like to imbibe such as her decisiveness, her leadership qualities, and so on. From her, I have learnt to be ‘my own person’, and that I think is the biggest lesson in life. I use it every single day whether it’s in my work or my personal relationships.”

INDIA: Mother's Day - Women of Strength

If you look beyond that gorgeous face and — to use the clichéd — sizzling hot body, you’ll see a young girl with plenty of poise, her soulful eyes brimming with determination. In the fickle arena that is Bollywood, actor Priyanka Chopra is that yummy blend of oomph and highly-valued professionalism. And for that one should applaud her parents.
“She is a sensible girl,” says her mother Madhu Chopra. “In fact, at times she behaves like my mother, and we start calling her grandma.”
But jokes apart, the Chopras are proud of their daughter’s success, and even prouder of the fact that she’s got her head screwed on all right. “When her father fell ill, she took control immediately. She gave the correct advice, and we listened to what she had to say. Now, I am confident that she is capable of taking care of herself and everyone in this house,” says the actor’s mum, who is a gynaecologist.
