UK: Nursing Council publishes new guidance on caring for older people

. LONDON, England / Health Service Journal / News / April 2, 2009 By Emma Dent The Nursing and Midwifery Council has published guidance on delivering compassionate care for older people. The NMC’s guidance says nurses need to have the “right knowledge, skills and attitude to care for older people”, including giving assistance with personal hygiene, continence needs, feeding and getting enough fluids and being able to challenge poor attitudes about and behaviour towards older people. The need to have the right communication skills to be able to discuss older people’s needs, care and treatment while supporting their self-respect and self-worth is also outlined.
