QATAR: Proposal to make retirement optional

. DOHA, Qatar / Gulf Times / March 22, 2009 By Ourouba Hussein Retirement might become optional for elderly people in Qatar, as the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) is set to recommend this option for them, during the forthcoming GCC Elderly and Future Challenges Forum. Al-Sada: Society should benefit from the experience of the elderly In a recent press meet, Tirfa al-Sada, vice president of SCFA elderly committee, flayed the marginalisation of the elderly people in the Arab world. The elderly in Europe, she added, played a major role in the society. “The elderly in Europe occupied positions like consultant and board members in many organisations and shared their rich experience with others. We should also do something similar for them,” al-Sada said. The retirement age in Qatar is 55 for women and 60 for men. The SCFA official stressed that those willing to offer their services should not be prevented from working. “Therefore, the SCFA has submitted a recommendation to make retirement optional,” she added. She maintained that the aim of the campaign was to raise awareness among families to take care of their elderly and bring them home from nursing homes. The two-day GCC forum on elderly issues is taking place on April 5-6 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Doha. It will be attended by non-governmental organisations, GCC family affairs councils as well as charity and social institutions. The conference aims to discuss the current situation and role of the elderly in the GCC States. © 2007-2008 Gulf-Times.com
