Virginia Call, 114, registered to vote on her birthday January 3, 2008
Virginia Call, who in 2007 told the Chicago Sun-Times she was born on January 4, 1894, died about 5:45 p.m. at Provident Hospital of Cook County, a nursing supervisor said Wednesday.
The supervisor said Call was 115 years old when she died.
In a 2007 interview, Call said she was born in Vaughn, Miss. to sharecropper parents who were “just coming out of slavery.” She outlived five siblings, and married twice.
She first married a young Mississippi farmer when she was a teenager. The pair had one child. She told the Sun-Times she worked “cooking for white folks” until the death of her husband. She then stayed home to help raise a grandchild and nine great-grandchildren.
In 1951, she followed her great-grandchildren north to Chicago, where she helped raise great-great-grandchildren. She outlived some of the fourth generation she helped raise.
“I’m glad to be alive,” she said during a low-key 113th birthday celebration in 2007.
Call’s granddaughter said in 2007 the family had documentation of her mother’s age in a misplaced family Bible.
Call was not listed as one of the 88 living supercentenarians, or those over the age of 110 years old, tracked by the Gerontology Research.

A Chicago woman who claimed to be 115 years old has died.
