The Caribbean island nation of Dominica has announced it will kick off a programme by month's end geared to assist Dominica’s centenarians.
Dominica's Minister for Community Development Loreen Bannis-Roberts says her ministry will make a monthly cash contribution to all of the country’s centenarians, in order to make their lives more comfortable.
“We will also be improving their living conditions in terms of their housing, water and electricity. The Local Government Department has done the survey and we do have a report that indicates their various needs. I am very pleased that our centenarians program will kick off in February,” Roberts said.
She emphasised Dominica has the highest number of centenarians “per capita in the world”, and citizens must take on the responsibility to ensure their needs are taken care of.
Independent estimates are that in 2008 Dominica had a population of 72,500. The 2006 per capita GDP was estimated at US$ 4,400.
