INDIA: Delhi Police to conduct survey of senior citizens

NEW DELHI / Press Trust of India / January 16, 2009 With increasing cases of the elderly falling victims to crime, Delhi Police has decided to conduct a survey of senior citizens residing in the city to ensure better security for them. The survey will begin from February one and will cover each and every house in the capital, Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal told reporters here. "We want to establish contact and ask them to register themselves. Let us see how can we help them," Dadwal said. Besides the survey of elderly citizens, city police has also decided to begin drives for tenant and servant verification from February one with a renewed vigour. Cases of elderly citizens at the receiving end have been reported quite often from the capital. Thirty-nine cases of attack on senior citizens, including 15 murders, were reported in the national capital last year with police saying that the crime against the elderly was in the decline in the past five years. Statistics provided by Delhi Police claim that the force was able to solve 32 out of the total 39 cases, arresting 57 people involved in attacks against the elderly. Out of the 15 murders, two were committed by servants while seven were committed by persons known to the victims. PTI News
