The large throng of relatives and friends who turned out to watch Dorothy Bang cut her 100th birthday cake Sunday are proof of her caring nature, her granddaughter says.
After raising her own two children with husband Arnold, Bang spent years looking after several grandchildren and great-grandchildren while their parents worked, Susan Murray said.
"All of her life she's been caring for people," she said during a party for Bang at her St. Catharines apartment building. "She's very caring, very loving. She's always been very supportive."
Bang, who turns 100 Tuesday, moved from Essex, England, to St. Catharines at age four with her parents and four siblings. Bang held a variety of jobs over the years, working in an accounting office, a bakery and as a live-in caregiver for about 20 years. She also taught Sunday school at St. George's Church.
Bang's husband died in 1956. She was one of the first tenants to move into a Gale Crescent apartment building when it was built 33 years ago and continues to live there on her own. Aside from deteriorating hearing and a recent hospital stay after breaking an elbow, Bang remains in good health, her granddaughter said.
Bang said she appreciated seeing so many well-wishers at her birthday celebration.
"It's wonderful. I never thought I'd have a party like this in my life," she said.
The ardent Royal watcher attributed her longevity to "living a quiet life."
