Obesity is known to pose major risks of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and various forms of cancer. In spite of this, only about a third of all men in Finland are of normal weight.
The connection between weight and the elevated risks of poor health is well known. Yet everywhere in the world, men in particular seem to be oblivious to this. The connection between expanding girths and heart diseases, as an example, is well documented. But ask the average man, and you will get differing answers.
"I feel fine, but yes, I am fat," says 41-year-old Ilpo from Espoo, who prefers to not give his surname. His reason for this is because he is embarrassed about being overweight.
