Eskaton's innovative National Demonstration Home shows how "smart" design and technology are married together, promoting independence and healthy aging.
The first-of-its-kind Eskaton National Demonstration Home combines universal design with innovative health, wellness and social technologies and green living options. This concept allows older adults to stay in their own homes longer, avoiding premature moves and maintaining independence.
“This type of home is preventative medicine, ” says Wes Justyn. “By incorporating universal design and health technologies in my mother ’s home, I know we ’ve not only saved money for long-term care, but also given her something much more valuable – her independence and dignity. ”
The Eskaton National Demonstration Home educational and research center opens its doors Thursday, October 23 in Roseville, CA. Aging experts, policymakers, technology leaders, and seniors and their families – including the Justyn ’s – will be in attendance to talk about this innovative project.
Murch says he hopes it will be a catalyst in showing the public – consumers, policymakers, researchers, aging and technology experts and the building industry – how this type of home represents the future of aging and homebuilding.
“We hope this first-of-its-kind project conveys how important livable design and technologies are for the future, ” says Murch. “With an expected 70 million boomers reaching retirement age in the next 20 years, we ’ve got to be proactive – and creative – with alternatives to sustain these individuals. I think this project will open the eyes of many different industries and why it ’s so important to prepare now – this is a billion dollar industry, but when you look at the big picture, what older adults get in return is something a billion dollars can ’t buy – their independence and dignity. ”

What happens when an older individual can no longer live in their current home? What happens when a family is so worried about their aging mom or dad that it disrupts their daily lives? What happens when an elder is not ready for nursing home or assisted living care – but has no other options?
For Wes and Robbie Justyn, these questions became a harsh reality when Wes Justyn ’s 90-year-old mother, Nettie, was no longer able to live in her home. “It was like she became a prisoner in her own home, ” says Robbie Justyn. “There were just too many barriers that kept her from being safe. ”
Wes Justyn, an Eskaton Senior Residences and Services board member, and his wife, Robbie, began researching options, but found none. “It was very frustrating, ” Justyn says. “My mother wasn ’t ready for a nursing home – in fact, outright refused it – but needed a home that was not only barrier-free, but helped with what means the most to her – increasing her independence, not diminishing it. ”
The Justyn ’s took matters into their own hands, creating a home based on barrier-free, universal design principles and health, wellness and social technologies. The result was a win-win for everyone.
“By incorporating universal design, and health and wellness technologies, we built a home that allowed my mother to stay independent while giving my wife and me piece of mind that she was okay, ” he says.
“Wes ’ experience was one of the driving forces behind why we built the Eskaton National Demonstration Home educational and research center, ” says Eskaton Senior Residences and Services CEO Todd Murch. “It made us realize that integrating comprehensive universal home features into the initial design of a new home will enable aging adults to get what they desire, the option to remain in their own homes. ”
